The National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Award, presented by the United States Department of Education, is based upon the following criteria.
- Strong leadership
- A clear vision and sense of mission that is shared by all connected with
the school
- High quality teaching
- Challenging and up-to-date curriculum, policies and practices that ensure
a safe environment conducive to learning
- A solid commitment to parental involvement

The national award selection process involves an
extensive written nomination, selection by a state blue ribbon committee and
qualification for a site visit from a national blue ribbon panel of
educators. The blue ribbon title is presented to elementary and
secondary schools across the nation on a rotating, bi-annual basis.
