Partners in Wellness Forum:
Families & Schools Working Together for a Healthy Community

The first annual Partners in Wellness Forum was held Saturday, February 24, 2007, at El Camino Creek School. Promoting the theme of "Families and Schools Working Together for a Healthy Community," the premiere event featured keynote speaker, Christine Wood, MD, from El Camino Pediatrics, eleven breakout sessions, and closing remarks by keynote speaker, Robert MacPhee, Founder and President of Heart Set, Inc.

Participants enjoyed a healthy breakfast followed Dr. Wood’s presentation, “How to Get Kids to Eat Great and Love It!” Breakout sessions included:
Myths and Realities of School Lunch” presented by Kevin LaPittus, Director of EUSD Child Nutrition Services; “Learn What Your Child is Learning in School About Healthy Lifestyles” presented by Irene Elliott, Director of EUSD Pupil Personnel services; “The Smart Consumer – Reading Labels” presented by Gabriela Sipe, Med, RD; “Let’s Get Active – Building Fitness into Your Family’s Lifestyle” presented by Carol Ross, MA, Exercise Physiologist, Owner of Personally Fit; “Improving Your Child’s Self Esteem and Motivation” presented by Fred Becker, The Becker Institute; “Ayudar a Su Familia a Hacer Eleciones Saludables (en Espanol)” presented by Maria Banuelos and Ramona Costa, North County Health Services; “What’s for Lunch Mom? Creative Menu Planning” presented by Sarah Naveh, Customer Care, Jimbo’s; How to Develop a Self-Reliant and Responsible Child” presented by Fred Becker, The Becker Institute; “PE is Fun!” presented by Dr. Conni Cintas, Principal of Paul Ecke Central School; “A Vision for a Healthy Community – EUSD’s Wellness Policy” presented by Dr. Lean King, EUSD Superintendent, and Carol Skiljan, EUSD Board of Trustees President; and “Ayudar a Su Familia a Hacer Eleciones Saludables (en Espanol)” presented by Maria Banuelos and Ramona Costa, North County Health Services.

Breakout sessions were followed by a presentation by Robert MacPhee, “The Heart Set Approach – How to Succeed at Getting and Staying Healthy!” and a Family Self-Assessment presented by Marla Strich, EUSD Board member.
