Eric Mugg, teacher at Paul Ecke Central School , Conni Cintas, principal at Paul Ecke Central School, and Will Brown, custodian at Capri School, were recognized by the Encinitas City Council for their leadership and outstanding efforts to recyle at their respective school sites. Paul Ecke Central has officially switched over from styrofoam to cardboard. The school has set up a recycling sorting station at lunch where the students empty their cardboard trays, determine whether or not they are clean or dirty, and stack them accordingly.  This ensures the clean trays are recycled and the dirty ones go in the trash.  Simply by stacking the trays the volume of waste has been significantly reduced.  At this station, they also recycle paper lunch bags, bottles and cans.  It is estimated that by simply sorting of lunch waste, the volume of trash is reduced by 60%.  The school went from using 16 bags of trash at lunch to only  4 bags.  It's really a significant difference and the students have quickly and enthusiastically adapted to the recycling process.  Plans include extending the program to the remainder of schools in EUSD the upcoming school year.
