Extraordinary News
In his message
on page 1, Dr. DeVore says,
"This issue is dedicated to all our extraordinary people."
On these two pages we pay tribute to some of the
extraordinary people of our district.
Winning
Web Page
Mike Guerena's fifth/sixth grade class
at Ocean Knoll placed second in the county and received an honorable mention
internationally for the web page they designed and wrote entitled, "Flowers, Surf,
and Community," all about Encinitas. The class competed against 580 schools from 37
countries. The students worked on the project day and night for a month and a half. To visit their web page, their address is:

On May 22, at the Disneyland Hotel, Delaine Eastin, State
Superintendent of Education presented Capri, Park Dale Lane and Mission Estancia with
their California Distinguished School Award. Of Encinitas Union School District's eight
schools, six have received this high honor and the other two an honorable mention.

"Pulling Together"
Comparing it to an old-fashioned barn
raising, Gail Patterson, principal at Flora Vista, was thrilled to see the entire
community come together to bring the Internet to 14 upper-grade classrooms on April 25.
"We pulled together, literally! Thousands of feet of cable were pulled through the
attic of the school, connected to jacks, attached to hubs, and then hooked up to the main
server. By the end of the day we had access to the Internet . . and to the future,"
she said.
Kids Videoconference with
Author
Our district Library Media Teacher, Willy Ginaven reports on an
exciting event that happened on March 19. "One of our fourth grade classes had the
opportunity to participate in a videoconference at our new Sony Distance Learning Center
at the district office. Cathy O'Neill and Barbara Berrier's class from Flora Vista enjoyed
listening to and interacting with author Mike Thaler, the Riddle King. Mr. Thaler was at
the new Joe Rindone Regional Technology Center at the San Diego County Department of
Education with a fourth grade class from National City while another class communicated
from Chula Vista. Thus, it was a three-way videoconference. Mr. Thaler could see our class
while we could see him on our large 53-inch screen.
"Mr. Thaler read from some of his books, taught a
lesson, then answered students' questions. We all had a good time participating in this
new way of communicating with an author and look forward to the next time!" At left,
the class gazes at Mr. Thaler's looming image. |
