named one of the top ten teachers in the county.

Dear Parents:
As the school year opens there is a great feeling of optimism in the air! We can all feel it! It is the optimism born of hope, pride and enthusiasm we all share because of the children and the opportunity for a rich and meaningful education for each of them.

I must admit, however, that it seems we just finished our previous school year as we begin this new one. What a success filled year it was for children, staff and schools. Here are a just a few of those successes from last year. Student SAT 9 scores continued to increase in all areas and rank among the very top We are 43rd out of approximately 1,000 school districts in our state and fourth in the county! Mary Lou Schultz (Pacific View teacher) was named Teacher of the Year and Mariann Collins (office manager at Flora Vista) was named Classified Employee of the Year out of all San Diego County schools. La Costa Heights was selected as one of 200 National Blue Ribbon Schools (both public and private) across our nation, and we enjoyed the unprecedented success of receiving our third CSBA Golden Bell Award for the Excel Reading Program at Ocean Knoll.

It is not surprising that with all our success for children the district continues to grow. To accommodate our growth in attendance we have added a number of new teachers and classified support personnel to our team of veterans. Proposition O dollars are hard at work modernizing, adding new classrooms and multipurpose rooms to various sites. On July 16, 1999 we celebrated the ground breaking of our newest school, El Camino Creek Elementary, scheduled to open in August, 2000.

Yes, it is an exciting time of change within our district as well as our lives as we approach the millenniumÑa millennium that celebrates breakpoint change. All we need to do is look at our lives today and compare them to just a few years ago and we can start to understand why some say we have entered the "whitewater of global change" or as Senge states, "the dance of change." The fact is our little world and the global world is changing faster than anyone ever thought possible. Technology is quickly propelling us through the "Information Age" to a new "Knowledge Based Age."

Change is everywhere in our daily lives, but one thing has and will continue to remain constant. And that is the fact that our students educational excellence is best achieved through the active involvement of teachers, students, administrators, and parents. I am inviting you all to join with the principals, teachers and classified support staff as we journey through this special year that will bring us to the 21st Century. There are many opportunities this year for each of you to make a positive difference in your child's education. Please attend your children's school events, be in attendance at parent-teacher conferences, read aloud to your child and have them read aloud to you, and get involved with your local PTA.

It is with total pride and commitment that I serve as the superintendent of this exemplary district. Our accomplishments to date and those yet to come are a direct reflection of the strong partnership between home and school. Our children are the future and that future starts now. As your superintendent, representing all the dedicated employees serving the children of our district, I am excited to join you as we work together to build a better tomorrow.
