EUSD Scores Again!

This La Costa Heights student has reason to rejoice. Test scores placed us in the top five districts county-wide.

Again the superb staff of the Encinitas Union School District prepared students for the arduous Stanford Achievement Test (SAT 9). Taken in the spring of 1999, all students in grades two through six were required to take a longer test than before due to the addition of the Standards-based Augmented section of the test.

The results are even more positive when it is taken into consideration that many more special education and English language learners took the test than in 1998. Analysis of the results show a trend toward higher scores when comparing grade to grade (i.e. 1998 second graders to 1999 second grade students) and also when comparing the same students as they move up a grade (i.e. 1998 second grade class and 1999 third grade class).

Grade Reading Math Language Spelling
  97-98 98-99 97-98 98-99 97-98 98-99 97-98 98-99
2nd 66 75 76 84 73 82 56 67
3rd 68 74 72 81 68 76 51 62
4th 72 74 66 75 69 71 62 64
5th 70 74 71 77 70 77 58 64
6th 75 75 82 85 74 78 66 69

This is a phenomenal achievement considering that the standards for math and language arts were approved at the state level in December 1998 and given to all teachers in January 1999.

In reading 82 percent of the second grade students scored at or above grade level, while 78 percent of the sixth grade students achieved this mark. In math similar scores reflect the high achievement of the district students. Eighty one percent of third grade students scored at or above, while 77 percent of the fifth grade students did. Language and spelling reflect the same pattern.

It is exciting to note that all of our schools are in the top half of the nation! Congratulations for the hard work. Of special notice are our Title I schools, Capri, Paul Ecke Central, Pacific View and Ocean Knoll. The teachers at all our schools have high expectations and provide the instructional program that allows for their students' success!

Teacher John Brown guides his Ocean Knoll fifth-grade students through Mathland. SAT-9 scores went up in all subjects in our district.

While the scores for our district are in the top five districts in San Diego County and 43rd in the state, we continue to strive for improvement. Throughout the year teachers and administrators will continue to analyze the scores and strengthen instructional programs.

Our children will continue to reach for the stars because of the tremendous efforts of our dedicated teams of teachers, classified support persons and administrators. A complete report of our SAT 9 scores can be found on the district home page at www.eusd.k12.ca.us under "Ed Services."
