Dear Parents:
Our 1997-98 school year began with the unexpected
announcement that Dr. Pat White accepted the position of superintendent for the Irvine
Union School District in Orange County. Pat White has provided exemplary leadership for
our district over the past four years and we have made great strides for children. As
Carol Skiljan, school board president, pointed out in her letter to parents, "our
district has been rich with accomplishment over the past several years and has gained a
positive momentum in the pursuit of our vision.î
I recently shared in a letter to parents that the song
entitled "our Children" from the musical Ragtime speaks of moving forward toward
the future but remembering that we leave behind us our footsteps in the sand. Our
footsteps of accomplishment are great. It is good that we remember and celebrate our
accomplishments of the past, but must continue to move forward toward our vision for the
future.
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "we can not always build
the future for our children, but we can build and prepare our children for the future.
"As interim superintendent, I will work toward moving us closer to our vision for
children that "all children learn, succeed, contribute to society, and lead
productive, satisfying lives." Using our strategic plan as a lens, I will focus on
supporting the momentum we have gained on our journey toward the future for your children.
We are off to a great start on that journey this year with
the reduction of class size in kindergarten, the implementation of the recently adopted
language arts curriculum, the continued action on Proposition O and the ongoing
recognition of technology as a powerful learning tool.
Recently I had the opportunity to visit classrooms across
the district. I realized that as we look towards the future we get the see the future
every day with your children. Working together, parents and staff can make our vision a
reality for them. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you as we build on our
accomplishments and empower all children to reach for the stars!
