Encinitas has a noteworthy tradition of recognizing and honoring its teachers through the Teacher of the Year program.  The Teacher of the Year program celebrates and pays special tribute to the tireless efforts of our outstanding teachers.  In doing so, the program brings well-deserved recognition to the whole teaching staff in the Encinitas Union School District.

A selection committee, made up of previous EUSD Teachers of the Year and the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, selected Vicky Hogrefe, teacher at Paul Ecke Central  School as the Encinitas Teacher of the Year. The selection criteria included personal and professional growth, commitment, professional skills, community involvement, philosophy of teaching and learning, and support and endorsement by one's peers.

Mrs. Hogrefe began teaching in the Encinitas Union School District in September of 1998 and taught for 15 years in El Cajon before coming to Encinitas. Since that time she has represented Paul Ecke Central School and the District in various capacities. She was the district's ELD Specialist in 2002-03. Mrs. Hogrefe has taken active roles in the GATE Program, site committee functions and is highly involved in PEC’s intervention program. She has brought her leadership to the teachers on site and in the district. She has served as a mentor teacher and is one of the district's reigning experts regarding English language development. She has been recognized by the San Diego County of Education's Biliteracy Symposium as a bilingual teacher of the year in 2002.

Mrs. Hogrefe has provided her expertise as a master teacher and has served as a BTSA Support Provider. Her excellent guidance has assisted new teachers in their quest to develop the necessary skills to become excellent teachers. She also provides staff development district-wide as a trainer of trainers for the HoughtonMifflin Language Arts adoption, and serves as PEC's coordinator of the CBET Program.

Within her 3rd and 4th grade transitional classroom, Mrs. Hogrefe instills a trusting environment where students excel and are eager to learn. Vicky is always well prepared and ready to help each child succeed. She is always upbeat and her peers recognize her hard work and dedication. She is a valued member of the team at Paul Ecke Central School. She truly models effective teaching!

Congratulations to all of our Teachers of the Year!
