Mary Lou Schultz Selected as
Teacher of the Year
1998-99

Encinitas has a noteworthy tradition of recognizing and honoring its teachers through the Teacher of the Year program. The Teacher of the Year program celebrates and pays special tribute to the tireless efforts of our outstanding teachers. In doing so, the program brings well-deserved recognition to the whole teaching staff in the Encinitas Union School District.

This year, each school site selected a Teacher of the Year. These outstanding teachers included:

  • Audrey Critchlow, Capri School
  • Marilyn Green, Flora Vista School
  • Sallie Kobulnicky, La Costa Heights School
  • Barbara Odling, Mission Estancia School
  • Rita Stevens, Ocean Knoll School
  • John Darland, Olivenhain Pioneer School
  • Steffi Ulrich, Park Dale Lane School
  • Mary Lou Schultz, Paul Ecke Central / Pacific View School

A selection committee, made up of previous EUSD Teachers of the Year and the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, selected Mary Lou Schultz, teacher at Paul Ecke Central / Pacific View School as the Encinitas Teacher of the Year. The selection criteria included personal and professional growth, commitment, professional skills, community involvement, philosophy of teaching and learning, and support and endorsement by one's peers.

Often, she goes above and beyond the four walls of her classroom and has made a variety of contributions to the teaching profession. Her colleagues describe her as an inspiration to her students and peers. She is dedicated, committed and always focused on serving children. In the spirit of Encinitas, Mrs. Schultz personifies "Children First."

toy1.bmp (131654 bytes)Mrs. Schultz has repeatedly demonstrated her leadership ability to motivate others as well as her willingness to collaborate with fellow teachers fostering a "family" feeling between students and staff. In concert with the District's mission, she is a life-long learner and generates this interest in her students as well. Over the years, Mrs. Schultz has been active in student council and school site council. She has been a school board member in the San Dieguito High School District. She has been a staff developer in the District and across the state. Her colleagues say, "Her energy is boundless, and her rapport with parents and the community is widely recognized." The Encinitas Union School District is fortunate to have Mary Lou Schultz as a teacher and applauds her as our Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Schultz will now progress to the San Diego County level of competition for County Teacher of the Year. All EUSD Teachers of the Year will be honored at our annual Salute to Stars ceremony on May 17, 1999, 6:00 PM, at Olivenhain Pioneer School.
