Surviving First-Day Jitters

ENCINITAS - The first day of school can be a little scary as both parents and children
adjust to big changes. With the Encinitas Union School District starting classes Monday,
Dan Grider, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, has a few suggestions to
help the do run smoothly:
- Make sure children get to bed early Sunday night so they get a full night's sleep.
- Leave enough time in the morning to allow for traffic.
- Talk to the child about the day - especially with younger or new students - so they know
what to expect Explain that they will be in a classroom, that they will be expected to
follow rules, and let them know their teacher's name.
- Go over what will happen once school is over. Explain who will pick them up and choose a
specific location
- Go to school and home with a buddy.
- Trust the teacher if a child is having a difficult time adjusting to being left at
school. Teachers are trained to work with children who are shy or anxious and will comfort
them.
- Sometimes it seems like it's the parents who have the harder time," Grider said.
- Here are the times that schools start:
- Capri School -- 8.55 a.m.
- Flora Vista School-- 8:30 a.m.
- La Costa Heights School -- 8:15 a.m.
- Mission Estancia School - 8:25 a.m.
- Ocean Knoll School -- 8.55 a.m.
- Olivenhain Pioneer School -- 8:35 a.m.
- Pacific View School -- 8:00 a.m.
- Park Dale Lane School -- 8:10 a.m.
- Paul Ecke Central School -- 8:05 a.m.
