Nutrition & Menus

Welcome to the Child Nutrition Department web page. We are committed to providing your children with a appetizing, nutritious lunch on a daily basis. EUSD participates in the National School Lunch Program. With the recent adoption of the School Meals Initiative, EUSD has chosen Nutrient Standard Menu Planning as a menu option. The Child Nutrition Department analyzes all of its menus with the help of nutrient analysis software. USDA has set strict guidelines for calories, fat and nutrient content. At the bottom of each menu, you will find the average weekly nutrient analysis of lunches served.

Please feel free to browse the site, and your feedback is always welcome.

Healthier Choices are Just Around the Corner

Many of you may have noticed that salad bars are popping up in the school lunch program. The new salad bar program was piloted at each school in the months of January and February with great success. The concept is to get children to make healthier choices and eat more vegetables.

During this program, students are offered choices like fresh broccoli, sliced mushrooms, sliced olives, shredded carrots, peas, raisins, cheese, croutons, lettuce and a variety of dressings in a “salad bar” type format that the kids really love. We hope to have the salad bar program efficient enough so that each school will have a regular salad bar, once a week, by the end of the school year.

The Board of Trustees, Superintendent and Director of Child Nutrition Services have all been working together to offer our students more healthy offerings. However, offering healthier foods is only the first step toward improving the wellness of our children. We have begun working on district wide programs that will incorporate healthy food choices, exercise and nutrition education.

The Child Nutrition Department is actively looking for participants (staff and parents) who would be interested in volunteering time to serve on a committee applying for a “SHAPE” grant (Shaping Health As Partners in Education).

The Child Nutrition Department also holds quarterly meetings called “Child Nutrition Advisory Meetings” and invites staff and parents to attend. These meetings address the issues of healthy choices, menu offerings and nutrition education. The next meeting will be held on May 24th at 3:30 in the Child Nutrition Office at El Camino Creek.

If you are interested in helping EUSD become a “SHAPE” district, would like to attend our “Child Nutrition Advisory” meetings or just have questions about the program, please feel free to call us at 760-943-2042.
