HEALTH CLERK

DEFINITION:

Under supervision of a school nurse, assists students who are ill, have accidents and/or require specialized health care attention; applies first aid under direction; maintains adequate health records.

DUTIES:

Maintains school health office, first aid kits and supplies; maintains all necessary records and reports of student accidents, illnesses, medication, and other related records and statistics; sends written notices as required; catalogs health education materials; makes preliminary evaluation of ill students within framework of Health Department requirements, school law, and District policies; administers first aid as directed by the school nurse in conducting vision and hearing test and pediculosis tests; maintains close communication with school nurse on proper procedures and problems, may do tube feeding, suctioning and other specialized health care procedures. Does other related work as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of

practical methods in caring for children
practical nursing and specialized health care procedures
first aid
record keeping and clerical procedures

Ability to

exercise judgment in dealing with emergencies and special health needs of children
handle emergency situations calmly and effectively
maintain high level of confidentiality
use discretion in handling confidential records, staff and student problems
establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and employees
compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports
understand and carry out oral and written instructions
type accurately at a corrected speed of 35 works per minute

Experience

some background in working with children
some experience or course work in health care desirable Education/License
equivalent to completion of twelfth grade
some home nursing courses desirable
must have a standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate
