SPECIAL DAY CLASS
(LEARNING HANDICAPPED)

FUNCTION:

Provides an educational program for learning handicapped pupils who have marked learning or behavior disorders, or both, associated with a neurological handicap or emotional disturbance but not attributable to mental retardation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the immediate direction of the Director of Pupil Personnel with assistance from the School Principal.

DUTIES:

• Teaches learning handicapped pupils with basic learning skills and other subject matter commensurate with the emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the pupils
• Provides individualized and small group instruction with emphasis on the basic skill areas which need remediation-
• Provides individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problem which relate to the pupil's total growth and development
• Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil's progress
• Assists other professional staff members in the diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of pupil's progress
• Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, and social skills and self image
• Assists in the integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where pupils can meet success
• Participates in inservice and professional growth activities
• Serves as a member of the school committee for admission, placement and evaluation of pupils in classes for the educationally handicapped
• Provides continual supervision on an "on call" basis for pupils assigned to his group as problem situations arise elsewhere in the school
• Performs those duties which are normally a part of school staff activity

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Credential:

General Elementary or Multiple Subjects and Learning Handicapped Specialist

Education:

Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Course work in the psychological characteristics of exceptional children and remedial techniques in the basic skills subject areas is desirable.

Experience:

Two years of successful classroom teaching in the district is normally required before assignment to this position. Experience in working with educationally handicapped children and/or in remedial teaching techniques, reteaching of reading, or reading center program is desirable. Clinical experience with the neurologically handicapped is desirable.

Personal Qualities:

Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils.

Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Empathy for the educationally handicapped pupil.
